THURSDAY, JUNE 19
6:45am-7:00 am: Registration - [Townsend School Parking Lot]
7:00a.m.-5:30 p.m. Trip to Christy Mission Site, Del Rio, TN [Leave from Townsend School Parking Lot - We will be leaving PROMPTLY at 7:00am]
Please note you will need to bring money to cover your own breakfast at Carver's Restaurant but lunch at the Mission Site is included.

Presented by Larry Myers
We’re taking a road trip to Del Rio, Tennessee to discover the setting of the adventures of Leonora Whitaker who was the inspiration for the story, Christy.
We’ll meet at the Townsend school parking lot to line up the caravan promptly at 7:00 a.m. If you are not driving to Del Rio, you may leave your car at the school parking lot or you need to find a ride to the parking lot. We’ll head to Carver’s Applehouse Restaurant in Cosby where we’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast. Then we’ll continue on our way to meet up with Larry Myers, grandson of Arter and Flora Corn (Jeb and Fairlight Spencer), in Del Rio (El Pano). Larry will point out the Burnett Boarding House (Miss Tatum’s) where Leonora (Christy) spent the night and the Runnion Store (General Store) where she met up with the mailman, Hubert Stokely (Ben Pentland). The railroad tracks that brought Leonora from North Carolina run straight through this little town.
Then Larry will lead us on back to Morgan Gap (Cutter Gap) passing by the “Old Mud Hole”. On the way we’ll stop by the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the building that served as the Ebenezer (Cutter Gap) Mission schoolhouse and church before being moved to its present location. Barbara League will tell us more about the area and the people who lived there including Opal Corn Myers, the subject of her book [Opal was a great help to Catherine Marshall's research]. You’ll have some time to walk around the cemetery and visit several graves of interest.
We’ll load back into the cars for the last mile to Christy Mission. Larry and his wife, Karen, will treat us to lunch and we’ll have plenty of time to explore the place where it all began. You can see the Click (O’Teale) cabin and wander around the mission property. All sites of interest are clearly marked - it's definetly a place where the spirit of Christy is sure to be felt.
All too soon it will be time to say goodbye. We’ll head out around 3:30 p.m. and be back to Townsend by 5:30 p.m.
Note: Please wear comfortable walking shoes. We recommend that you bring sun screen, a hat and bug repellent. A picnic blanket might come in handy, too.
FRIDAY, JUNE 20
8:30-9:00 AM: Registration [Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center]
9:00am-10:15: Christmas at Ebenezer Mission: Neither Evergreen nor Everbronze [GSMHC Auditorium]

Presented by Marilyn Mitchen
As much as she [Mother] could tell me, I would write. . . . I would tell the story of the first year. Eleven months in a young woman's life.
Christy, Prologue
Catherine Marshall chose to focus on January-November 1912, thus omitting the celebration of Christmas from her novel, Christy. Join historian and author Marilyn Mitchem for her presentation, the first ever, on Christmas at Ebenezer Mission. You’ll celebrate Ebenezer Mission's first Christmas with Katherine Plantz, who, rather than stay in Wisconsin and mourn the loss of her father with family, left for Tennessee to celebrate with strangers. Be fascinated as you learn how the local mountain people observed Christmas with the sometimes humorous, sometimes deadly, mix of merriment and moonshine. You'll relive John and Leonora Whitaker Wood's service at Ebenezer Mission, and the ways they strove to teach the lesson, "It is better to give than to receive," to their students. Interwoven throughout Marilyn's presentation is the tale of a luxuriant, undomesticated plant, "neither evergreen nor everbronze," and one man's vision for it as the economic salvation of Appalachia.
10:30-11:30 AM: I Lift Up Mine Eyes Unto the Hills [Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center]

Presented by Kathy Gwinn
Kathy will be sharing with us the role faith played in the day-to-day living of the Mountain People. What were their greatest struggles and needs? How did their continued practice of “looking up” to the Creator of those mountains make a difference between giving up or pressing on? We will also hear about the life stories of the earliest ministers, the Circuit-Riding Preachers. Those men were called by God to shepherd the flock albeit over the mountains or down in the Valley.
LUNCH BREAK
